Tent Camping in Redmond, Oregon

Tent camping in central Oregon.

Redmond is where east Oregon meets west. Hiking trails, lakes, rivers, national and state forests make Redmond a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Several nearby recreation areas welcome campers and have spaces for tents.

  1. Climate

    • Redmond is 3,077 feet above sea level. Warm days with low humidity create ideal conditions for star gazing during the cool nights. East of the Cascades, the climate is high desert and sage brush.

    Smith Rock

    • This Oregon state park is on the banks of the Crooked River and is known internationally for exceptional rock climbing. Bivouac walk-in campsites--available on a "first come, first served basis"--are ideal for tent campers who want to explore the geological land formations on foot or by climbing the rock walls. Several thousand climbs entice climbers in the park.

    Cove Palisades

    • On the edge of Lake Billy Chinook, Cove Palisades is a full-service campground with a marina, a store, and boat rentals. Group tent camping and individual tent sites are available. The area has trails for hiking, biking and nature watching. The lake provides water recreation opportunities from kayaking to water skiing.

    Tumalo State Park

    • Tumalo State Park is on the bank of the Deschutes River. The Deschutes is known for rafting, trout fishing and hiking. Over 50 tent sites are available, and group camping can be arranged.

    Forest Camping

    • The Deschutes National Forest allows dispersed camping away from developed campgrounds. Dispersed camping means no toilets, drinking water and no fire grates are provided. Many people drive out on Forest Service roads and pitch their tent in a clearing or on a spot near a stream or with a view of the mountains. Pack out what you pack in and leave the area better than how you found it.
