House arrests save on incarceration costs.

House arrest is the process in which a person is confined to a residence, by a legal authority, as an alternative to either jail, prison or juvenile detention.

  1. History

    • Although home confinement existed as far back as 1900, modern-day house arrest, which is electronically monitored by law enforcement, dates back to 1983.

    Features

    • When a person must submit to house arrest as ordered by a court, travel is usually restricted, if allowed at all. In certain circumstances the person may be allowed to travel to and from work.

    Function

    • Authorities are able to monitor people on house arrest through an electronic monitoring device attached to them, usually around the ankle. This device alerts authorities whether the device is tampered with or whether the device travels a certain distance away from the residence.

    Benefits

    • The goal of house arrest, just like prison or jail, is to reduce the probability of people committing new crimes. The alternative of house arrest limits prison populations and saves on costs.

    Famous Ties

    • Famous Americans who have been exposed to house arrest include Martha Stewart, former boxing champion Riddick Bowe, director Roman Polanski, NFL quarterback Michael Vick and Paris Hilton.
