Not many of us spend much time thinking about the size of our uterus. However, a uterus that is abnormally large, or an enlarged uterus, is more than just a misshapen organ.

  1. Difference between a Regular and Enlarged Uterus

    • A regular uterus is about the size of an apple or clenched fist. An enlarged uterus is distended, and often compared tothe size a uterus might be at later stages of pregnancy.

    Symptoms

    • An enlarged uterus is most noticeable when it causes mild, stabbing pains. However, as it becomes more distended, you may notice a swelling of the abdomen, similar to a pregnancy bump.

    Causes

    • An enlarged uterus maybe caused by a variety of issues. The most common causes of an enlarged uterus are uterine fibroids, uterine cancer and, rarely, menopause.

    Affects

    • An enlarged uterus usually has very little effect outside of its symptoms. However, it can negatively impact fertility.

    Treatment

    • Treatment for an enlarged uterus is dependent upon the cause. Common treatments, especially in the case of uterine fibroids, are medication, myomectomy and hysterectomy.
