Difference Between Male and Female Weimaraners

The weimaraner is a hunting breed.

Weimaraners are large dogs known for their gray coat and light amber or blue-gray eyes. As with other dog breeds, the greatest behavior difference between males and females occurs if they are not neutered or spayed.

Size

Male weimaraners are taller and heavier than females. Males stand 25 to 27 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 70 and 85 pounds. Females stand 23 to 25 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 55 and 65 pounds.

Other Physical Differences

Males may have a need for more vigorous activity, according to the book "Weimaraners." Additionally, the male's build tends to be strong and stocky, while the female's is more slender.

Personality

According to the Delaware Valley Weimaraner Club, it is a misconception that females of the breed are more affectionate than males. Both sexes have equally lovable personalities.

Intact Males

Once they reach about 2 years old, intact (unneutered) males may become more difficult to control and are more likely to roam and become aggressive with other dogs.

Intact Females

An unspayed female is in heat twice a year, during which time she will attract male dogs and can become pregnant. Her behavior may be somewhat erratic during this time.
