Ovarian Cysts & Left Flank Pain

An ovarian cyst can cause a myriad of symptoms, such as left flank pain. It is important to have any type of pain examined by a physician to determine the cause.

  1. Identification

    • Left flank pain refers to pain that is on only the left side of the body. Flank pain occurs between the upper abdomen and the back.

    Causes

    • Some causes of left flank pain may be kidney problems, degenerative disc disease, spinal arthritis and shingles. Ovarian cysts also may cause left flank pain as well as an ectopic pregnancy.

    Symptoms Of Ovarian Cysts

    • Some of the most common symptoms of an ovarian cyst are menstrual irregularities, back and flank pain, pelvic pain, pain during intercourse, pain during bowel movements, nausea and vomiting. However, some ovarian cyst sufferers may experience no symptoms at all.

    Types

    • Types of ovarian cysts that may cause left flank pain are a follicular cyst and a corpus luteum cyst. Many ovarian cysts go away on their own with no treatment. Ovarian cysts that cause persistent pain may need to be evaluated by a doctor.

    Considerations

    • Consult a doctor if you have persistent left flank pain or if you have a sudden sharp pain in the pelvic area. If pain is accompanied by fever, it may be a sign of a serious condition and should be treated as a medical emergency.
