HHO Technology Myth

HHO Technology Myth thumbnail
HHO is one of many devices purported to improve fuel economy.

Perhaps the biggest myth about the effectiveness of HHO (a mixture of oxygen and hydrogen gases) as a fuel-saving gas is that it's a myth. While science has yet to explain exactly how HHO works, it's not hard to find someone using it who knows that it does.

  1. Function

    • HHO generators use electricity to split the water molecule into its component atoms, hydrogen and oxygen. The engine siphons the gaseous oxy-hydrogen mix away and uses it as a supplemental fuel.

    Claims

    • HHO proponents claim that the engine burns the hydrogen as a supplemental fuel, allowing the engine to maintain speed while injecting less gasoline.

    Debate

    • The most common argument against HHO gas is that the engine has to produce electricity (derived from burning gasoline) to make it. Gasoline has more inherent energy potential than HHO gas, so HHO cannot possibly contribute more energy than it took to make it.

    Considerations

    • One argument for HHO is that because it carries hydrogen (which is much simpler in construction and easier to burn than gas) and oxygen (which can allow gasoline to combust more completely), it acts more as a catalyst to help burn the gasoline more efficiency than a fuel in its own right.

    Science and Future

    • The science and engineering behind HHO is complex and difficult to reproduce consistently. Until someone produces verifiable data and repeatable results, HHO will likely remain a fringe science.
