General Laborer Job Description

Save

A general laborer performs the most basic tasks, usually within an industrial or a construction environment. While this is an entry-level role requiring little education, a candidate for this type of job needs to be in good physical health. She may have to perform manual labor in poor conditions, such as outdoors during inclement winter.

Loading and Unloading

  • Working at loading docks, general laborers load and unload cargo from truck, trains, boats and other modes of transportation. They're not heavy-equipment operators, though they might use special equipment in their work -- such as cargo carriers, dollies, or walk-behind forklift machines. However, these general laborers must be strong enough to lift heavy objects.

Maintenance Tasks

  • A general laborer is often responsible for maintaining his work environment, such as sweeping, mopping and performing janitorial duties.

High School Optional

  • While some employers may require a high school diploma for a general laborer job, formal education is usually not a prerequisite.

Average Compensation

  • Indeed.com reports that the average salary for a general laborer in the United States was $23,000 annually as of May 2014.
