What Insurance Companies Consider a Sports Car
Although insurance providers do not necessarily classify sports cars as such when figuring out your premiums, there are some car features that will drive up your insurance.
-
VIN Classifications
-
Vin numbers hold the key. Georgia insurance provider Johnny Pachuta says that sports car features can be ascertained in your car's VIN number. This is a serial number that includes your car's history and specific characteristics.
Engine Size
-
Engine size is a definite sports car feature. Larger engines make for faster cars. Sports cars are fast cars, therefore associated with more accidents. Sports car owners can expect to pay more for their insurance strictly because of this feature.
-
Safety Considerations
-
Sports cars are built for speed, not necessarily safety. Sports cars are not considered extremely safe cars. The design and size of the sports car is geared more toward fun than practicality and safety.
Add-ons
-
Souped-up add-ons can tip you into the sports car realm. You can have an ordinary car that includes a sports package. The addition of a turbo-charged motor, a spoiler or a slight change from a two door to four door can send your run-of-the-mill ride into sports car territory.
Common Misconceptions
-
Color plays no role in insurance classifications. Pachuta says the color of your car does not clinch it as a sports car. Although the color red is often associated with sports cars, it in no way affects the classification system.
