Supplemental Pregnancy Insurance
If you plan on starting a family soon, it's a good idea to apply for supplemental pregnancy insurance. The policy will give you the additional coverage that you need to cover medical costs associated with prenatal care, labor and delivery.

When to Apply
-
It's best for a woman to apply for supplemental pregnancy insurance before becoming pregnant, since a number of insurance companies will not provide coverage if pregnancy is the sole reason for the application.
Benefits
-
Supplemental pregnancy insurance provides additional coverage for women who may encounter complications during pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes or preeclampsia. The insurance will also provide financial assistance to women who are experiencing a high-risk pregnancy, so that mother and baby can be cared for properly.

Asking About Coverage
-
Most insurance that comes from an employer will cover basic medical costs associated with pregnancy. If the policy that a woman receives from work doesn't cover pregnancy, it is possible to have this feature added by the human resources department, but there may be a monthly fee.
What Isn't Covered
-
If the baby needs additional medical care after delivery, this is not covered by supplemental pregnancy insurance--many insurance companies will give the mother a few weeks to add their babies to their regular insurance policy as well. Extra hospital care for the mother after the baby is born is also not covered by the supplemental insurance.
Waiting Period
-
Many women start applying for supplemental pregnancy insurance even before attempting to conceive, as some insurance companies have a waiting period, and coverage may not be available if the woman does not apply soon enough.
