ADSL is the most common DSL choice for residential subscribers.

Technically, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Internet connections all have a type, whether that type is Asymmetrical DSL (ADSL) or something else. Sometimes DSL is referred to as xDSL, where the x represents the type of DSL.

  1. How ADSL Works

    • ADSL Internet connections send and receive data over a telephone wire as any DSL connection does, but a higher emphasis is placed on the downstream so as to improve download speeds.

    ADSL Speeds

    • An ADSL connection is capable of download speeds up to 8 Mbps, but can only upload at about 640 Kbps. This is fine for most residential subscribers who receive information more often than they send it.

    Who Uses ADSL

    • Residential subscribers use ADSL because of its cost effectiveness and higher maximum download speed.

    Symmetric DSL

    • The type of DSL that is opposite of ADSL is Symmetric DSL (SDSL). It is called symmetric because its download and upload speeds are identical, or symmetrical. It runs on a dedicated line similar to T1 connections and is accordingly more expensive than ADSL.

    Who Uses SDSL

    • Companies and places of business may invest in an SDSL connection because it is more reliable and offers higher upload speeds.
