Fuel-saving HHO (hydrogen-hydrogen-oxygen, or "oxyhydrogen") generation systems have been a source of controversy for some time. HHO kits are inexpensive to build and install, but you'd do well to remember the safety risks involved.

  1. Purpose

    • HHO cells use electricity to break up the water molecule (H20) into its component hydrogen and oxygen atoms. The engine siphons off the resulting oxyhydrogen gas and uses it as a supplemental fuel.

    Function

    • HHO cells contain a stack of metal plates (separated by about 1/8-inch) submerged in water. When electricity tries to pass from one plate to the next, it encounters the water and splits its molecule in a process known as electrolysis.

    Danger

    • Like nitromethane, oxyhydrogen gas carries its own fuel and oxidizer. This makes the gas extremely explosive when subjected to heat.

    Safety

    • Any good HHO system will use a filter-type or water-bubble flame arrestor in the HHO output line. These arrestors keep engine backfire from igniting any HHO caught in the lines or cell.

    Fun Fact

    • Water-powered cars are nothing new. Filipino inventor Daniel Dingel built an HHO-powered car in 1968.
