When your thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough hormones, you have hypothyroidism. Although hypothyroidism is usually not linked to eye diseases, it can produce puffy eyes in severe cases, according to Mayo Clinic. However, there are ways to treat puffy eyes.

Cause

The skin around the eyes is more sensitive. Any water retention under the eyes will be more pronounced causing the eyes to look puffy. According to Eye Care Basics, using a cold compress can reduce swelling.

Cold Compress

To use a cold compress, fill a Ziploc bag with ice cubes. Wrap the plastic bag in a washcloth and place it over eyes for a few minutes. You can also use chilled tea bags, cucumber slices or potato slices to reduce swelling.

Witch Hazel

According to Health Care Tips, witch hazel is a good astringent and can be used to reduce puffy eyes. Soak cotton or wool pads in witch hazel and place over eyes for 15 minutes.

Sleep

Since fluids tend to accumulate around the eyes while you sleep, Mayo Clinic suggests sleeping with your head elevated at least a few inches from the bed. An extra pillow may help.

Medication

Your health care physician can prescribe medication or procedures to treat hypothyroidism and in the process, treat the symptoms (puffy eyes included) associated with it.
