Navistar supplies diesel engines for the Ford F-150.

The Ford F-150 is part of the Ford Motor Company's F-Series full-sized pickup truck line, first introduced in 1948. Long the best selling vehicle in the US market, the F-150 is powered by gasoline or Power Stroke diesel engines, the latter supplied to it by Navistar International Corporation.

  1. History

    • Ford began to include a diesel option with its pickup truck in 1982. That first engine was a 6.9L V8 supplied to it by Navistar.

    Significance

    • Although originally offered in the F-150, the diesel option is currently available only with Super Duty F-Series trucks. That engine is a 6.7L turbo V8.

    Power

    • The current Ford diesel produces 390 horsepower and 735 pound feet of torque. The EPA does not publish fuel ratings.

    Competitors

    • Ford's American competition also relies on suppliers for their diesel engines. Dodge Ram trucks source Cummins Inc. while GM gets its Duramax diesels from DMAX, a company owned by GM and Isuzu.

    Future

    • A smaller 4.4L diesel engine is expected to join Ford's diesel fleet in the future. It will be made available for the F-150.
