What Is Iolite?

Iolite, from the Greek word meaning violet, is a gemstone often called the "water sapphire." Because of its soothing beauty, iolite is quickly becoming popular with gem enthusiasts. This gem is mined in Sri Lanka, India, Madagascar and Burma. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Function

    • Iolite is found in earrings, rings, pendants and bracelets and is often matched with sterling silver and yellow gold.

    Identification

    • The most sought-after hue of iolite is violet blue, but the gem also comes in yellowish gray, blue, bluish violet and violet. Traditional cuts are used in making iolite jewelry, including square, round, oval and rectangle.

    Uses

    • Wearing a piece of jewelry that includes iolite is said to bring the wearer good luck with money management. Iolite is used as the 21st anniversary gemstone.

    Location

    • When the iolite gem was first found, it was mined in Norway and Greenland. However, those stocks have since been depleted. It can also be found in small quantities in both Canada and the United States.

    Care

    • Iolite is harder than many other gems but should still be protected. It can be cleaned with mild dish soap, using a soft-bristle toothbrush to scrub around any corners.
