Who Rates the Performance of Investment Companies?
Mutual funds are the most commonly recognized investment company available to individual investors, and have a wide array of measures by which their performance is evaluated. Morningstar is likely the most popular of services, but other vendors such as Kiplinger's Personal Finance, Lipper and several others rate funds based on criteria such as objective, asset class and style, returns and risk and expenses.

Morningstar's ranking method uses between one and five stars (worst to best) to demonstrate the overall quality of a fund based on performance, risk, style, expense and other means over varying time frames and vs. fund peers. It is available online or in hard copy.
Lipper

Also available by subscription, Lipper's proprietary ranking system uses numbers--one through five--to evaluate the performance and quality of mutual funds. Lipper is oriented toward global institutional research.

Kiplinger's Personal Finance is a publication that offers a broad range of personal finance information. The online platform allows queries based on fund style and category, performance, management and operational criteria and time frames.
