Cats typically sleep up to 17 hours per day, according to the SPCA of Texas' online article "Sleeping Cats." There are times in life, however, when cats may not be able to sleep and medication may be needed.

Cats may have trouble sleeping especially during unsettling times such as moving to a new home and boarding in a kennel.

Types

J. Veronika Kiklevich, DVM mentions in her article "Easy Rider" for Cat Channel that a veterinarian may prescribe sedation or even antihistamine medication to aid a cat in sleeping.

Effects

J. Veronika Kiklevich, DVM also states in her Cat Channel "Easy Rider" article that medication to help cats sleep may cause liver problems, disorientation, or low blood pressure.

Expert Insight

If medication is needed to help a cat sleep, visit a veterinarian to have the cat examined. The vet will determine if the cat is fit and will supply the proper medication if it is deemed appropriate.

Cats should never, in any circumstances, be given human sleep medication due to the severe health consequences that may result.

There are a variety of medications available online including Chlor-Trimeton, Valium, Prozac and Amitriptyline, as well as several homeopathic remedies to help with sleeping and stress problems in cats. These medications should only be given under a vet's supervision.
