What Is the Difference Between Provigil & Wellbutrin?

Provigil (modafinil) and Wellbutrin (bupropion) are two commonly prescribed drugs that may be used for the treatment of depression, but there are differences in their primary functions and mechanisms of action in the body.

  1. Provigil

    • Provigil (modafinil) is used primarily for the treatment of disorders including narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea and shift work sleep disorder. Provigil works to improve consistent wakefulness for those suffering from these conditions.

    Wellbutrin

    • Wellbutrin (bupropion) is prescribed for the treatment of depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Wellbutrin works to increase specific activity in the brain to balance and enhance mood.

    Modafinil

    • Modafinil is the general classification of drugs that includes Provigil as well as Alertec, Vigicer and Modalert. Modafinil stimulates orexin neurons that promote wakefulness as well as mood enhancement. Modafinil is primarily used for alertness, but is also prescribed for treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and as an enhancer to antidepressants.

    Bupropion

    • Bupropion includes Wellbutrin and other antidepressants such as Aplenzin and Budeprion and smoking cessation medications like Zyban. The Physicians’ Desk Reference explains that bupropion works to balance levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain.

    Warnings

    • Though both Provigil and Wellbutrin can be prescribed for the treatment of depression, always consult your physician to determine which prescription is right for you. Never self-medicate without consulting a physician to avoid the risk of drug interactions and serious or fatal side effects.
