Shih Tzu Breathing Problems

The Shih Tzu is a popular breed of small dog in the United States. The dogs have lively personalities and desirable short muzzles. Their appearance, while adorable, can lead to breathing-related health problems.

  1. Features

    • Signs of breathing difficulty are snoring, wheezing or breathing heavily through its mouth (especially after exercise).

    Causes

    • Breeds such as Shih Tzus are known as being brachycephalic. This is a description for dogs with flat, pushed-in faces. Brachycephalic dogs can suffer from an elongated soft palate. This causes a partial obstruction in the dog’s airway, resulting in snoring and difficulty breathing that worsen as the dog ages.

    Treatment

    • If a dog’s condition worsens, the soft palate can be surgically trimmed.

    Prevention

    • To keep breathing difficulty to a minimum, Shih Tzus should be kept in moderate temperatures, not allowed to overexert themselves when exercising, and kept at a healthy weight.

    Considerations

    • Before purchasing a Shih Tzu, research and understand the possible complications they may have. With every breed, always look for reputable breeders. A good breeder’s dogs are less likely to have many health issues.
