Difference Between Webcast & Podcast

On demand news or entertainment can be streamed or downloaded to a computer...

Being able to watch or listen to news or entertainment without fighting over the remote is one of the greatest advantages of the Internet when it comes to hearing a podcast or watching a webcast, and the difference between the two is small but significant.

  1. Function of a webcast

    • A webcast is a delivery of media over the Internet using streaming technology. The media can take the form of audio and/or video, and the advantage is the ability to watch what, where, and when on a personal pc in private or in a classroom.

    Function of a podcast

    • A podcast is a media audio file that is automatically received from the internet and then synced or downloaded to an MP3 player, hand held computer, laptop or desktop. The files are received by subscribing to what's called a podcast feed.

    Benefits

    • Podcasts are portable and to download a podcast a software program called a podcatcher is used to either update a daily podcast or search for new podcasts in a subject area. To listen to streaming content like webcasts a computer with a fast internet connection is required, however technology is changing rapidly enough that the speed of the connection will not be a factor.

    Significance

    • In the media arena of podcasting there is content for everybody, a niche for a small audience of ten or a large audience of one hundred thousand. A webcast is a tool primarily geared for large audiences, and is used of course by every major television or cable network, business and sports teams from the National Basketball Association to the National Football League.

    Potential

    • With podcatching software becoming more sophisticated, podcasts have been giving webcasts some competition as video podcasting has users downloading movie reviews, performances by local bands and even previews of plays coming to cities across the United States. Webcasting is not sitting still as the streaming content has become small enough to be viewed on cellphones.
