What Is the Purpose of an Anemometer?

An anemometer is an instrument used for measuring wind speed. It is used in weather stations, and a number of variations of the instrument are available.

  1. Function

    • An anemometer spins in the wind, rotating at the same speed. Thus it measures the wind directly.

    Measurement Scale

    • Anemometers measure wind using the Beaufort Wind Scale. This was created in 1806 by Irish hydrographer Sir Francis Beaufort (1774-1857).

    Wind Speed Levels

    • The Beaufort Wind Scale operates on a scale of 0 to 12. This determines the strength of wind--from calm to hurricane-like force.

    Types

    • The most common anemometer is the rotational kind, represented by four rotating cups. Other types include hot-air, ultrasonic, deflection and pressure tube anemometers.

    Manufacture

    • A simple anemometer can be made using items that include paper cups, drinking straws, a pin and stick, and tape.
