Information on Soy-Based Baby Formulas

Wake up--it's time to eat.

Soy-based baby formula is one of many options on the shelves at your local grocery. Before switching from regular formula to soy, be sure you understand the differences.

  1. Lactose

    • Regular formula contains lactose, a sugar found in cow's milk. Babies with allergic reactions to lactose may need to be switched to a soy formula. Colicky babies also usually do better on soy formula.

    Animal Protein

    • Animal protein is in milk-based formulas, and some children have reactions to it. Vegetarian parents sometimes choose to use soy formula to avoid feeding animal proteins to a child.

    Isoflavones

    • Iisoflavones, a plant-derived phytoestrogen, are in soy formulas. They act similarly to estrogen, but no studies have confirmed any adverse effects.

    Enzymes

    • Soy formulas' affect on enzymes in the body is a growing concern. The body may become more susceptible to disease and less able to absorb medication.

    Aluminum

    • There is some concern about the presence of aluminum in soy formulas. Toxic levels in the body can cause many problems.
