    • Namenda is the brand name of the drug memantine. Namenda is approved by the FDA for the treatment of symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, a disease that typically affects elderly people.

    • Namenda works by blocking certain receptors in the brain from excessive amounts of glutamate.

    Children

    • According to RxList.com, there have not been adequate clinical trials to determine the safety or usefulness of Namenda for children.

    Research

    • According to a 2007 article in the journal "Health and Medicine Week," a research team from the Indiana University Department of Psychiatry concluded that further studies were needed to determine the "efficacy and safety" of using memantine to treat pervasive developmental disorders, such as autism, in children.
