Selenium sulfide is a medication with anti-infective properties. It comes in different forms and is used mostly as a shampoo. Selenium sulfide is only to be used topically.

Function

Selenium sulfide is used on the scalp to treat dandruff, psoriasis, seborrhea and fungal infections. Selenium sulfide is also used on the skin to treat fungal infections such as tinea versicolor.
Types

Selenium sulfide comes in shampoo form, both foam and liquid. It also comes in a topical form as a skin lotion used to treat some infections.

Considerations

When used as a shampoo, selenium sulfide can cause hair discoloration if hair is bleached, gray, blond, chemically permed or tinted. At least 48 hours should pass before using the medication on hair that has been dyed or permed.
Side Effects

According to Medline Plus, side effects include hair loss or discoloration, severe redness or irritation of the skin and either oiliness or dryness of the scalp and hair.
