Florida Handicap Permit Information

Parking space reserved as handicapped parking for individuals with disabilities

Chapter 320.0848 of the Florida Statutes allows for the issuance of handicap parking permits, which drivers can use to park in spots designated for the disabled.

Certification

Applicants must complete and submit form HSMV 83039, available at county tax collector offices. The form must be certified by a physician, osteopathic physician, advanced registered nurse practitioner or an optometrist.

Identification

Drivers must have a current Florida driver's license or state ID card and must affix an official decal with this number to their parking permit. Those unable to obtain one of these forms of identification due to disability or illness may claim a special exemption.

Time Frame

Disabled parking permits are issued for a period of four years and expire on the applicant's birthday.

Fees

Four-year permits are free of charge; however, those receiving a temporary six-month permit must pay a small fee plus tax collector fees.

Considerations

Applicants also can request wheelchair license plates at their county tax collector's office. Current plates must be surrendered. The wheelchair plates will be issued to expire on the same date as the surrendered plates.
