Military Flagpole Height Requirements

A specific requirement height for military flags does not exist. These service flags should fly on poles or staffs that can accommodate the flags. You should also consider the wind and weather when researching the correct size pole and military flag size.

  1. Indoor staffs

    • Indoor military flagstaffs are generally seven to nine feet in length. A pole topper such as an Army spear adds another seven inches to the staff. This type of staff normally carries a 3 x 5 or a 4 x 6 flag.

    Outdoor home staffs

    • A 3 x 5 foot flag offers an excellent flag size for a home display. A 15-foot pole would handle a military flag of that size.

    Public building staffs

    • Generally, 20 to 25 feet in length works well for public building flagstaffs. This staff would carry a 4 x 6-foot or a 5 x 8-foot flag.

    Memorial gardens and monuments

    • Generally, large flagstaffs provide a focal point for a memorial garden or monument. A larger pole would carry a larger flag. For example, a 30 to 35-foot pole would need a 6 x 10-foot flag.

    Building mounted staffs

    • These staffs provide a focal point and display when the ground space does not allow for a traditional flagpole. Although a small staff, the pole should carry a 3 x 5-foot military flag. The staff mount should angle so that the flag does not touch the ground.
