How Do Sensory Receptors Act As Transducers?

Sensory receptors are structures beneath our skin and other systems, both internal and external, that allows us to experience the outside world. The receptors act as transducers, transferring the sensations into electrical impulses.

  1. Sensory Receptors

    • Sensory receptors enable us to see, hear, feel, smell and taste the world around us. There are four types of receptors: chemoreceptors, photoreceptors, thermoreceptors and mechanoreceptors.

    Transferring Sensations

    • When the receptors act as transducers, they transfer sensations into impulses that are carried along the nerve system to the brain. These impulses in the brain tell us what we are experiencing.

    Seeing Is Believing

    • Photoreceptors are how we see the world. These impulses shape the images our eyes deliver to our brain.

    Spice Of Life

    • Chemoreceptors receive chemical stimuli and send it on to the brain. Your sense of smell and taste rely on these receptors.

    Hot and Cold

    • Thermoreceptors are located on the skin and in the mouth. Thermoreceptors are how we feel heat and cold.

    Hearing The World

    • Mechanoreceptors respond to pressure and movement, like feeling the wood grain of a table top. The small hairs in the cochlea of the ear are mechanoreceptors, enabling us to hear.
