The Advantages of Exterior Satin Paint Over Flat Paint
The development of acrylic latex paint products greatly increased the quality of water-based exterior-grade house paint. These paints are rated by their sheen (or shine) and, going from shiny to dull, include, glossy, semi-gloss, satin finish and flat.
-
Shine
-
Exterior satin-finish house paint has a sheen to it that glistens slightly when the sun shines on the surface. Flat paint is great for cutting down on the glare, but most homeowners prefer the partially shiny surface of a satin paint.
Ease of Application
-
Satin paint is easy to apply. The rich body of the paint lets the paint build up on the surface of the building, where it can then be pushed around with a roller or a brush to create an even top coat.
-
Washability
-
The surface of satin paint allows you to wash the outside of your house with greater ease than a flat exterior paint. The partially shiny surface takes well to an occasional washing, which will make your house shine again.
Brushwork
-
The viscous nature of satin paint allows the brushwork to show. This is an enhancing quality that adds a special luster to any wooden surface, whether it be clapboard or just simple window or door trim.
Extended Life
-
The satin finish will hold up a little better against the elements than a similar application completed with a flat exterior paint. The extra body found in satin paint is more difficult for the wind, rain and snow to break down.
