What Is the Definition of Liberal Studies?

Liberal studies is a broad and all-encompassing field designed with the aim of offering a solid base for future studies in virtually any field. It is especially useful, and often employed, in the training of elementary school teachers, since they are required to teach all subjects.

Language Arts/Humanities

Liberal studies typically includes a language arts and humanities component that focuses on the studying of literature, writing and communication skills. It often includes linguistics and a honing of speaking skills.

Mathematics

Mathematics requirements can vary, but may include algebra, geometry, calculus and trigonometry. Frequently, those who pursue liberal studies in college will have certain core math courses they must complete, or they may be able to choose from a list of options.

Social Sciences

Social or behavioral sciences is a branch of study that focuses on human interaction. Courses include history, geography, political science, psychology, criminal justice, economics, cultural studies, archeology, philosophy and anthropology.
