What Is a Faux Shearling Coat?

Shearling coats have had a reputation for being warm, stylish, and durable since the 1920s. As of 2010, the cost for a genuine shearling coat averages $1,000. Faux shearling coats are becoming popular for their lower price and animal friendly construction.

  1. Materials

    • While an authentic shearling coat is made from the skin and wool of a sheep, a faux shearling coat is made with man-made materials. Usually these coats are made of 100 percent polyester, which makes them an ideal choice for those with who are looking for animal friendly outerwear.

    Cost

    • Polyester fabrics are available at all prices, so it's not unusual for a faux shearling coat to be found for one-tenth of the cost of a true shearling coat.

    Colors

    • Faux shearling coats come in a wide variety of colors, but the majority are made in natural colors.

    Style

    • Faux shearling coats come in a variety of styles, the most common being a 3/4 length coat. Other styles include waist-length, full-length and hip-length. Most faux shearling coats have button closure, but they are also available with zippers.
Some of the more informal styles have hoods, which are especially useful in colder climates.

    Care

    • Caring for a faux shearling coat is easy. Most care tags on faux shearling coats instruct you to spot clean with a damp cloth and dry clean when needed.
