LED Christmas Lights Facts

Light-emitting diode (LED) Christmas lights have become a popular alternative to standard Christmas lighting with incandescent bulbs. The facts behind this newer lighting style may satisfy curiosity as to why they've become so prevalent. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Science

    • Inside each LED light is a small semi-conducting chip that carries electrical current. As the current passes through one side of the chip (the anode) to the other side of the chip (the cathode) electrons emit a wavelength of light.

    Colors

    • Different colors of lights are created by shortening or lengthening the wavelength that is produced by the reaction. The material used for the semiconductor ultimately identifies the color that is produced.

    Efficiency

    • LED lights became popular as a new importance was placed on the energy inefficiencies of standard incandescent Christmas lighting. LED Christmas lights operate at a rate that is up to 90 percent more efficient than incandescent bulbs.

    Popularity

    • Along with prohibitive cost, early LEDs were originally available in just a few colors--green, red and yellow. Older bulbs were also prone to failure, or dimming over time. LED Christmas lighting started to become more popular in the early 2000s as the technology involved in creating them became more affordable, the lights more durable, and the variety of available colors expanded.

    Longevity

    • LED lights are resilient and are less susceptible to total failure. However, over the course of their lifetime, they can lose brightness and suffer from a gradual lowering of light.
