Causes
-
Molds grow on different types of wood found in most homes. Drywall paper, wooden panels, lumber and the backs of carpets are breeding grounds for mold. Mold uses wood as a source of food.
Prevention
-
Fungi need oxygen, food, moisture and the right temperature in order to grow. By eliminating at least one of these conditions, mold growth will not occur.

Eliminating Fungi
-
Staining wood with fungicides is one of the best ways to stop mold from forming. Another method is to reduce the oxygen found in wood by submerging it in water, then quickly allowing it to dry. This solution works well for loose pieces of lumber but not for structures and large pieces of wooden furniture.
Treatment
-
Wood that has already been infected by mold can be cleaned with detergent and water or with the use of bleach. Depending on how much of the wood has been infected with fungi, cleaning mold is relatively easy, but if a large amount is present then professional services may be required.
Considerations
-
Molds are always present and cannot be totally eliminated but their infestation in wood can be contained or effectively reduced.
