What Kind of Cookware Should be Used for a Glass Top Stove?

Glass top stoves look beautiful. Their flat surface also makes them easier to clean than other ranges. However, many home cooks wonder what kind of cookware should be used on a glass top stove. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Exercise Care

    • You can use almost any type of cookware on your glass top stove, so long as you are very careful. Do not bang your cookware down or slide it across the glass.

    Check the Bottom

    • The bottom of your cookware should be smooth and flat. If it is ridged or rough, the glass surface can be scratched.

    Cast Iron Concerns

    • Although many worry about its heavy weight, you can use cast iron on your glass top stove. Use the same care as you would for any piece of cookware. Don't slam the pan down on the surface.

    Melting Porcelain

    • GE's glass top range instructions warn that if porcelain or plastic melt onto the glass and harden, the entire surface will have to be replaced. Avoid using plastic on a glass top stove and watch that porcelain coated utensils do not get too hot.

    Copper or Aluminum Staining

    • You can use cookware with an aluminum or copper base on a glass stove. However, do not let them boil dry or they will leave a discoloration on the stove's surface.
