Hand Held Grinder Safety

Hand-held grinders are a common tool in home and professional workshops, but the powered wheel can pose safety hazards from flying debris and breakage. The homeowner needs to follow safety precautions to prevent injury. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Wheel

    • Inspect the wheel for cracks, which can cause the wheel to break and cause injury. Test the wheel by carefully tapping it with a nonmetallic item. If it "rings," it is safe.

    Manufacturer's Guidelines

    • These should be followed when mounting the wheel. The wheel should be attached tightly, but turn easily. This will prevent breakage during use.

    Safety Gear

    • Goggles or safety glasses should be worn.

Wear a face shield or safety glasses, gloves and hearing protection. These protect you from flying debris, sharp edges and hearing damage. The grinder should have the appropriate safeguards in place.

    Using the Grinder

    • Turn off the wheel to make any changes. Don't stand in the path of the wheel, where sparks and flying debris are present.

    Other Considerations

    • The environment should be clean. Flammable items should be kept elsewhere as sparks can cause a fire. The worker should wear snug clothing and remove jewelry that could catch in the wheel.
