Koi

Koi are well-known pond fish in the carp family that have dynamic personalities. Koi come in orange, yellow, black, white or variegated color.

Goldfish

Goldfish are popular pond stocking fish because of the range of fish available and adaptability to pond environments. Goldfish are typically gold or black. Types of goldfish suited for ponds include Fantail, Comet and Black Moor.

Orfe

Orfe are a schooling type of carp suitable for large ponds. You need at least three orfe in your pond, and the species is highly sensitive to water conditions and is therefore not recommended for beginners.

Catfish

Catfish can live in outdoor ponds in temperate climates that do not freeze. Hypostomus plecostomus is a popular pond catfish.

Warning

Avoid adding predators such as turtles until your pond is well-established. Do not mix wild fish with pond fish since the former may be aggressive.

Tip

Mix goldfish and koi for an interesting pond. Choose fish that are at least three inches long and keep in mind how large the fish will be when mature to avoid crowding your pond.
