Transponder Definition

The word transponder is based on "transmitter" and "responder." It refers to a communications device that receives a signal and then sends out a responding signal. Transponders are useful for electronic automation and monitoring data.

  1. Radio Frequency Identification

    • Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology uses a transponder. An RFID tag embedded in retail merchandise can receive data on a chip with an antenna that can store data and respond to radio messages.

    Significance

    • Transponders can be used to automate electronic commands, identify objects and track events. The USDA, FDA and other government agencies have promoted the use of RFID.

    Benefits

    • Transponders can be used by law enforcement to track and identify stolen property. These devices can also communicate high data rates instantly even if the transponder is in motion.

    Considerations

    • Transponders do not require line-of-sight communication between the transmitter and the receiver. Transponder tags can withstand adverse environmental conditions such as paint, dirt and moisture, making them ideal for monitoring outdoor environments.

    Automated Data Collection

    • Automated Data Collection (ADC) is a transponder-based system used to save time and money as well as increase accuracy of tracking information. AccuCode designs these systems for the government and a wide range of industries.

    Broadcasting

    • Television and radio stations use satellite transponders to run prerecorded and live nationally-syndicated shows. Broadcast equipment allows for multiple channels of transponders from multiple sources.
