Japanese Business Etiquette in the U.S.

Business etiquette for Japanese businesses are very different than those of business in the United States. Whether business is being done in Japan or in the United States, there are a few etiquette tips to follow that can be crucial to having a successful business relationship with Japanese businesses.

  1. Greeting

    • A bow is the most common greeting in Japanese culture. When greeted with a bow, you should return the bow only bending as low as the person giving it did. The lowness of a bow shows the status in the relationship. Keep your palms flat at your side.

    Introductions

    • When giving introductions, be sure to use the last name and not the first name. The proper title to use in Japanese is San, which is the same as Mr. or Ms. Requesting that they use your first name is a sign of disrespect. Also, do not mispronounce a name. If you are not sure how to pronounce it, ask.

    Business Cards

    • Venture Japan says "In Japanese business etiquette, Japanese business cards are a 'must have'." You should have double sided business cards with English on one side and Japanese on the other. Hand your business card to them with the Japanese side up. Also, it is proper to have a carrying case for the cards received from them and to place them in that as a sign of respect.

    Dressing

    • Clothing is important in the business world in Japan. Men should wear navy or black suits with a white shirt and tie from October to April. However from May to September a gray suit should be worn. Women should wear long skirts or trousers suits following the color guideline that men use.

    Meetings

    • Business meetings incorporate respect with the Japanese. You should arrive at least 10 minutes early. Wait to be seated as the parties are to be seated on certain sides of the table because of a Japanese custom. Take notes during the meeting. It shows that this meeting is important to you. Also, be careful what you promise as they will also be taking notes and will recall on them if needed.
