The Definition for Green House Effect

The greenhouse gas effect occurs when gases in the atmosphere trap infrared energy from sunlight. Infrared energy is later emitted as heat. Some of these greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and water vapor.

Significance

Greenhouse gases and their effect on the atmosphere have been linked to global warming and global climate change. Many of these gases originate from industrial gas waste and volcanic sources.

Effects

Greenhouse gases gain their name from their ability to absorb infrared energy from sunlight and release it in the form of heat. This effect is analogous to the effect of glass in a greenhouse.

Benefits

If not for greenhouse gases, the planet would quickly lose heat and be unable to thermo-regulate. Greenhouse gases, though detrimental in excessive amounts, are necessary to support life.

Geography

Greenhouse gases are everywhere, and distributed throughout the atmosphere. Due to the Earth's rotation and other factors, some areas have denser greenhouse gases.
