Programmer analysts develop software and computer systems. These previously separated job titles are becoming more common as technology advances and allows professionals to work with both software and hardware.

Programmer

A programmer writes software code, tests and maintains the software, and expands existing software by modifying or changing code.

Analyst

Analysts design and develop new computer systems or revise existing systems to perform additional tasks. This involves configuring, testing, and modifying computer hardware and software. They will also work directly with the end-user to make sure the system is working to their specifications.

Combined Role

The combined occupation referred to as a programmer analyst requires proficiency in both roles, and knowledge of computer programming, software, hardware and maintenance. Combining these responsibilities ensures software and hardware run efficiently, and allows for customization of software and hardware applications.

Skills

Skills required for this role can vary because of the amount of different software, hardware and programming languages. In most cases, skills include proficiency in one or several programming languages, and one or several computer systems.
