Difference Between a Hurricane Warning & Watch

A hurricane is a potentially dangerous low-pressure system, with sustained winds of 74 mph or greater, that forms over the tropics. Hurricane watches and warnings are issued by the National Weather Service to indicate the time frame in which a hurricane may make landfall.

  1. Hurricane Watch Time Frame

    • A hurricane watch is issued when a hurricane is a possible threat within 24 to 36 hours. The watch is often issued for a wide section of coast.

    Hurricane Warning Time Frame

    • A hurricane warning is issued when a hurricane is expected to make landfall within 24 hours. Warnings often cover a narrower area than watches.

    Preparation During a Watch

    • All outside furniture should be tied down. Windows should be covered. Double-check your emergency kit. Listen to the radio or watch TV for further instructions.

    Preparation During a Warning

    • Listen to all officials and evacuate if told to do so. Stay away from flood waters while driving. Stay away from windows. Know that tornadoes are often spawned by hurricanes. Be prepared for quickly changing weather conditions.

    Categorization of Storms

    • Hurricanes are giving a category number based on the wind speed surrounding the eye. Category 1 hurricanes have the lowest wind speeds; Category 5 the highest. However, these can be deceptive. Water surge and heavy rains cause significant damage during a hurricane. Be prepared and alert during all hurricanes to remain safe.
