Is it Possible to Get Pregnant When You Have Mirena?

The Mirena IUD is a form of birth control that is inserted into a woman's uterus and is effective for up to five years. It is not, however, 100% effective.

How It Works

The Mirena IUD releases a progestin and thickens cervical mucus to prevent sperm from entering the uterus and makes the lining of the uterus thin. This ensures that even if the egg and sperm meet, the lining is inhospitable for making a fetus.

Chance of Pregnancy

The risk of pregnancy for women who have been using the Mirena IUD for one year is about 2 in 1000.

Risks for the Pregnancy

While using the Mirena IUD, you may have an ectopic pregnancy, when the pregnancy occurs in the fallopian tubes instead of the uterus.

If the pregnancy does occur in the uterus, you can still contract a severe infection, miscarry or prematurely deliver of the baby.

Removal

If you become pregnant, your doctor may try to remove the Mirena IUD to prevent further complications in the pregnancy. Even removal carries a risk of miscarriage.
