Rash Reaction to Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin is in the penicillin family of antibiotics. It is used to treat bacterial infections. If you are allergic to penicillin, you are most likely allergic to amoxicillin as well. Any time you have a rash from taking an antibiotic, chances are you are allergic to that medication. A rash caused by amoxicillin is usually on the trunk of the body but can spread to the arms, legs and face.

  1. Things to Look For

    • The rash from amoxicillin doesn't usually begin on the first day of taking the medication. Sometimes it won't show up until later in the treatment process, even as late as day seven or eight. Any time you are taking a new medication, or even if you've taken it before, make sure you read the side effects/reaction packet that comes with the medication. A rash is the most common reaction that lets you know your body is allergic.

    What to Do

    • Stop taking the medicine immediately. Call your doctor and let him know about the rash. He may want to prescribe another antibiotic at this point. There are many other antibiotics out there, so don't panic if you are unable to take penicillin.

    Treatment

    • Try taking an oatmeal bath to sooth skin and relieve some of the itching. Take an antihistamine to help relieve some of the rash symptoms such as itchiness. A corticosteroid cream might also help with itching and redness.

    Alternate Treatment Option

    • If the rash persists and doesn't improve within a few days, you may want to check with your doctor. He may want to prescribe a cortisone shot to relieve your pain and discomfort.

    Warning

    • If you have difficulty breathing, get medical attention right away. This could indicate a severe drug reaction.
