Grand Canyon Helicopter Rides

Grand Canyon Helicopter Rides thumbnail
Grand Canyon by helicopter is a breathtaking experience.

The major difference between an airplane and a helicopter is the speed and elevation at which they fly. Seeing the Grand Canyon from a helicopter, as opposed to an airplane, is usually preferred by most travelers.

  1. Significance

    • Helicopters provide a slower and smoother ride over the Grand Canyon. Helicopters also get closer so the view is much more spectacular.

    Time and Geography

    • Airplanes can cover more area in less time than helicopters. Depending on where you go, helicopter rides are normally 25 to 45 minutes and airplane flights are around 45 to 90 minutes.

    Cost

    • Helicopter flights usually cost between $175 and $235. Airplane flights usually cost between $120 and $300. Both flights normally have discounts for children.

    Considerations

    • Because of noise regulations, approximately 75 percent of the park is off-limits to helicopters and airplanes. The North and South Rims as well as the "corridor zone" are all off-limits.

    Benefits

    • While 75 percent of the park is off-limits to aircraft, the 25 percent that can be viewed from above still is beautiful scenery. Most of that scenery would be hidden if it was not viewed from above.

    Fun Fact

    • Havasu Canyon is a rugged, remote location that can only be accessed by foot, mule, or helicopter. No roads lead to Supai, the last town in the U.S. that still has its mail delivered by mule.
