Allergic Reactions to Polysporin Antibiotic Cream

Polysporin antibiotic cream is used to prevent or treat skin infections in minor cuts, scrapes and burns. The cream kills bacteria that cause infections. Side effects and allergic reactions to this product are uncommon.

  1. Ingredients

    • Polysporin antibiotic cream contains the active ingredients polymyxin B sulfate and gramicidin. Other ingredients include methylparaben, mineral oil, petrolatum, poloxamer, propylene glycol, water and wax.

    Application

    • Polysporin antibiotic cream should be applied up to three times a day and gently rubbed into the affected area. It should not be used on large areas of the body because this can lead to excessive absorption, which can cause systemic side effects.

    Side Effect

    • The only side effect associated with Polysporin antibiotic cream in over 1 percent of users is irritation at the area where the cream is applied. This is not an allergic reaction.

    Allergic Reaction

    • Signs of an allergic reaction to Polysporin antibiotic cream include rash or hives, difficulty breathing or throat, facial or mouth swelling. These symptoms call for immediate medical attention.

    Caution

    • Polysporin antibiotic cream should not be used by anyone allergic to polymyxin B sulfate or gramicidin, or to any of the additional ingredients.
