Face Masks can Help Prevent Spread of the Swine Flu

Most people who become ill with the H1N1 virus, or swine flu, will be able to manage the symptoms with home treatment.

  1. Recognizing Swine Flu Symptoms

    • In order to begin proper home treatment, recognizing the symptoms of the swine flu is pertinent. According to the Center for Disease Control, symptoms include fever, stuffy or runny nose, headache, body aches, fatigue and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea.

    Medication Treatment for Swine Flu

    • Treating the swine flu at home includes reducing the symptoms in order to feel more comfortable. Over- the-counter pain reducers can be used for fever and body aches. Cold medication can be used for cold-like symptoms.

    Home Care Precautions

    • Rest is necessary, and fluids should be consumed to help prevent complications. Face masks should be worn around the home to prevent spreading the virus, and those with a fever should avoid leaving the home until the fever has been gone for at least 24 hours without the aid of medication.

    Who Should Use Home Treatment

    • Home treatment is recommended for those who have a mild case of the flu, and do not fall into one of the high-risk categories as outlined by the CDC.

When Home Treatment is not Enough

    • Ill people who are having severe warning signs that accompany the flu, such as breathing complications, dizziness, confusion, fever with a rash, or persistent vomiting should seek emergency care immediately.
