Lichen ruber planus is a type of skin disease that causes an itchy, uncomfortable rash. Lichen ruber planus can affect many areas of your body, including your genitals, arms and legs.

    Causes

    • In some cases, the exact cause of lichen ruber planus cannot be determined. The Mayo Clinic reports that possible causes of the condition include an immune-system response to an allergen or drug and hepatitis C.

    Time Frame

    • Lichen ruber planus can last several months or even a year, according to the Mayo Clinic.

    Risks

    • Long-term cases of lichen ruber planus increase your risk of developing skin cancer, the Mayo Clinic warns.

    Treatment

    • Lichen ruber planus eventually clears up on its own, though it may persist for a long time before it does so. Treatments to reduce the inflammation and itching, but not cure the condition, include antihistamines, phototherapy or light therapy, and prescription topical or oral cortciosteroid medications.
