Information on Becoming a Firefighter
In past years, firefighters needed only to be 18 years and a high school graduate, but as firefighting techniques become more advanced, many new firefighters are seeking advanced training and higher education.
-
Minimum Requirements
-
Prospective firefighter recruits must be at least 18, hold a high school degree and be physically and mentally able to endure the high-stress situations firefighters face.
Higher Education
-
Though college is not always a requirement, many new firefighters have taken courses or earned degrees in fire science at community colleges or universities.
-
Training
-
Every fire department requires new recruits to undergo specialized training, usually lasting a few weeks. Recruits learn about tools of the trade, as well as firefighting, fire prevention and rescue techniques.
EMT Certification
-
Many fire departments now require incoming firefighters be certified as emergency medical technicians. Some fire departments will provide this training, while others require certification in advance.
National Training
-
New firefighters may participate in one or a number of short national training programs offered by the United States National Fire Academy in firefighting techniques and strategies.
