What Is the Difference Between Eczema & Hives?

According to the National Institute of Health, "hives are red and sometimes itchy bumps on the skin." Eczema is a term for several different types of skin swelling that cause red, scaly and itchy skin.

  1. Features

    • According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, "hives are the result of an allergic reaction to a drug or food. Hives can appear anywhere on the body. Eczema is primarily caused from irritating substances and genetics. The rash caused from eczema generally appears on the face, elbows and knees."

    Treatment

    • As a rule, hives generally require no medical treatment; eczema is treated with prescribed corticosteroid ointments.

    Significance

    • Hives and eczema share the potential for creating the need for emergency medical care. Serious hive outbreaks can restrict airways. Eczema's skin lesions can develop staph infections.

    Considerations

    • Triggers that cause flare-ups for hives and eczema can be identified through tedious trial and error methods.

    History

    • America's first dermatology institution, The New York Skin and Cancer Hospital opened in 1882.

    Warning

    • Without a confirmed diagnosis from a medical doctor, over the counter medications are not recommended. Applying the wrong medication can make the problem worse.
