Although we often do not realize it, we interact with hydrogen constantly--in fact, it even keeps us alive. Understanding the origins of hydrogen gives a better perspective of the universe and how hydrogen could further revolutionize the world as a fuel.

Identification

Hydrogen is the lightest and simplest of all the elements--only containing a single proton. Because hydrogen has less weight than air, it easily escapes Earth's atmosphere.

The name "hydrogen" is formed from the Greek words "hydro" ("water") and "genes" ("forming"), according to the Royal Society of Chemists. Put together it means "water forming."

Size

Uses

Some of the key components of life contain hydrogen, notably water (H2O). Farmers use hydrogen to make ammonia, a key compound in fertilizer. Space shuttles use hydrogen for fuel, and hydrogen will likely replace gasoline as the world's fuel choice.
