What are GED Exams in the USA?

The GED, or General Education Development Diploma, is a standardized test that allows you to demonstrate your mastery of concepts and ideas commonly taught in college. Approximately 90 percent of colleges and universities, and 95 percent of employers accept the GED as being equivalent to a high school diploma.

  1. Size

    • The GED exam is 285 questions. Possible test scores range from 200 to 800, with 410 being the minimum score to pass.

    Time Frame

    • The GED exam takes seven hours to complete.

    Types of Subjects

    • Subjects covered in the GED are writing, social structure, science, language arts and mathematics.

    Locations

    • GED exams are offered nationwide at specialized American Council of Education testing centers. There are 3,400 centers as of October 2009.

    Features

    • In 2009, the cost for the GED test was $95 with a retest fee of $19 if the first test was not successful. To qualify for the GED test, you must be 16 years old, not enrolled in a high school program at the time of the test and have never graduated from high school or received an equivalency exam.

    Preparation

    • GED preparation courses are available online, through test preparation companies, and at junior and community colleges.
