Introduction to WiFi Technology

WiFi is the shorthand term for a worldwide wireless networking technology standard. WiFi access points provide users within a designated range to have access to the network or Internet without cumbersome cables or other inconveniences.

  1. Definition

    • The term WiFi includes any system that uses the 802.11 standard developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 1997.

    Required Equipment

    • To establish a Wi-Fi network, computers must be equipped with WiFi network cards that connect wirelessly to the Internet via a wireless router.

    Router

    • When connected to the Internet through a modem, the router uses radio-based technology to distribute a wireless signal to all users within an established perimeter. Equipment that detects this signal can gain access to the Internet.

    Extending the Signal

    • To extend the perimeter where access is available, use a wireless signal booster. These are sold by online and in-store electronics retailers.

    Security

    • WiFi networks can be "open" or "closed." Anyone can access open networks, but closed networks require an intricate password for access.
